Bird protection

Lake Starnberg bird sanctuary: a paradise for nature lovers Our Lake Starnberg is an important bird sanctuary in the foothills of the Alps and therefore a must for every nature lover. As part of the NATURA 2000 network and the global Ramsar network, the lake, with its impressive size and depth, offers a unique refuge for over 20,000 water birds of more than 30 species.

In summer, when the lake becomes a popular leisure spot, breeding is rare, but the endangered common tern, which breeds on a nesting raft, is a spectacular highlight. In the fall, however, the lake transforms into a vibrant stage for bird life. Migratory birds from Northern and Eastern Europe as well as long-distance migrants from remote regions such as Russia and Siberia stop here. Rare species such as black-throated divers and red-throated divers find refuge here in winter.

Water sports associations have committed themselves to restricting the winter resting areas in the period from November 1 to March 31 in order to protect the birds.
